Hanes Foundation Grants: NC Nonprofits



If your nonprofit serves Winston-Salem or Forsyth County, the John W. & Anna H. Hanes Foundation is a grant opportunity to add to your funding calendar. The Foundation supports North Carolina 501(c)(3) organizations and gives priority to projects that enhance residents’ lives, especially short-term or non-recurring initiatives.


Who Can Apply

You may be eligible if your organization is:

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit

  • Based in North Carolina

  • Proposing a program that primarily benefits Winston-Salem and/or Forsyth County


What They Fund

The Foundation’s funding interests include:

  • Health & human services

  • Arts, education, culture & humanities

  • Environment & animals

  • International / societal benefit

  • Religion


They generally prefer short-term projects over ongoing operating support, though early-stage program expenses may be considered in some cases.


Deadlines (Quarterly)


Applications are typically reviewed quarterly with deadlines on:March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15.


How to Strengthen Your Application


To be competitive, make sure your request clearly explains:

  • The local impact (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County residents served)

  • defined timeline (pilot, launch, or one-time project)

  • Measurable outcomes (3–5 simple results you’ll track)

  • Any community support or partner funding you’ve requested or secured
